The best way to keep a card's value is to protect it the moment it leaves the pack. Here's a simple guide to the right gear for every card, from bulk to your best pulls.
The basics: sleeves and top loaders
Penny sleeves
Thin, clear sleeves that stop scratches and dust. Every card worth keeping should go in one, and they're the first layer before a top loader.
Top loaders
Rigid plastic holders for your valuable cards. Sleeve the card first, then slide it into the top loader. They're also the standard way to ship singles safely.
Team bags
Resealable bags that fit over a top loader or a small stack of sleeved cards to keep out dust and moisture.

For playing: deck sleeves and deck boxes
Tournament decks need opaque, matching sleeves. Many players double-sleeve: a tight inner sleeve plus an outer sleeve for extra protection while shuffling. Keep your deck in a sturdy deck box so corners don't get crushed in your bag, and play on a playmat to protect cards from the table.
For collecting: binders
Binders are perfect for showing off a set or keeping your trade stock organised. Look for:
- Side-loading pockets, so cards don't slide out the top.
- Zipper or strap closures to keep dust out.
- No O-ring binders for valuable cards. The rings can dent cards in the pages closest to the spine.
For your best cards: graded slabs
Graded cards come sealed in a hard case, but slabs can still scratch or crack. Protect them with graded card sleeves and cases, and store them upright in a graded storage box.
Storage mistakes to avoid
- Humidity: damp basements cause cards to curl and warp.
- Sunlight: direct sun fades card art over time.
- Heat: hot cars and windowsills can warp cards and melt some sleeves.
- Rubber bands: they dent the edges of the top and bottom cards.
- Stacking heavy items: pressure on loose cards causes bends.
Quick checklist
- Sleeve it straight out of the pack.
- Top loader for anything valuable.
- Binder or storage box for the rest.
- Keep it cool, dry and out of the sun.
