A "raw" card is one that's never been graded. A "graded" card has been checked by a grading company, given a condition score, and sealed in a tamper-evident case called a slab. Here's how it works and when it's worth it.
What grading does
- Confirms it's authentic. A slab from a trusted grader means the card has been checked.
- Scores the condition. Most graders use a 1 to 10 scale, with 10 being close to perfect. Centering, corners, edges and surface all count.
- Protects the card. The sealed case keeps it safe from wear and handling.
- Makes it easier to sell. Buyers know exactly what they're getting, and high grades often sell for well above raw copies.
The main grading companies
- PSA: the most widely known grader, and often the most popular with collectors.
- BGS (Beckett): known for subgrades on centering, corners, edges and surface.
- CGC: a popular choice for Pokémon and One Piece cards.
- SGC: another established grader with a growing TCG following.
Is my card worth grading?
Grading costs money and takes time, so it's usually worth it when:
- The card is valuable, or popular enough that a high grade adds a lot of value.
- It's in true Near Mint condition. Check it closely with our condition guide. Visible whitening, scratches or off-center printing will lower the grade.
- You plan to keep it long-term or sell it, where the slab's protection and authentication really pay off.
For most bulk and lower-value cards, a sleeve and top loader is all you need.
Should I buy raw or graded?
- Buy raw if you want the card for a deck or binder, or want the lowest price.
- Buy graded if you want certainty on condition and authenticity, or you're collecting top-tier cards as a long-term hold.

Protecting slabs
Slabs can still scratch or crack. Keep them in graded card sleeves and cases and store them upright.
